Summing amplifier

In the previous exercise, we have seen the necessity for a summing system in order to realize an amplitude modulation. This system can be realized by the following assembly in which the operational amplifier is ideal.

1/ Ascertain the expression of 𝑉− as a function of 𝑣1, 𝑣2 and 𝑣𝑠.

Kirchhoff’s law at the inverting input node : 𝑖1+𝑖2+𝑖+𝑖−=0.

But 𝑖−≈0, so 𝑖1+𝑖2+𝑖=0, i.e.

1𝑅1(𝑣1−𝑉−)+1𝑅2(𝑣2−𝑉−)+1𝑅(𝑣𝑠−𝑉−)=0𝑉−(1𝑅1+1𝑅2+1𝑅)=𝑣1𝑅1+𝑣2𝑅2+𝑣𝑠𝑅𝑉−=𝑣1𝑅1+𝑣2𝑅2+𝑣𝑠𝑅1𝑅1+1𝑅2+1𝑅

2/ Deduce an expression of 𝑣𝑠 as a function of 𝑣1 and 𝑣2.

The op-amp is ideal and the feedback is negative, so it operates in the linear regime : 𝜀=0, hence 𝑉−=𝑉+=0 (the non-inverting input is grounded).

Injecting 𝑉−=0 in the previous relation,

𝑣1𝑅1+𝑣2𝑅2+𝑣𝑠𝑅=0𝑣𝑠=−𝑅(𝑣1𝑅1+𝑣2𝑅2)

3/ Under which condition does 𝑣𝑠=−(𝑣1+𝑣2) ?

Corrigé
If 𝑅=𝑅1=𝑅2, then 𝑣𝑠=−𝑣1−𝑣2.

4/ The aim is to have 𝑣𝑠,2=𝑣1+𝑣2. Which transfer function needs to be placed after the previous system to obtain 𝑣𝑠,2 ? Suggest an electronic assembly that would have this transfer function.

𝐻2=𝑣𝑠,2𝑣𝑠=𝑣1+𝑣2−𝑣1−𝑣2=−1

An inverting amplifier can have this transfer function :

𝐻2=−𝑅3𝑅4⇒if𝑅3=𝑅4⇒𝐻2=−1
